What Does a Guest Service Representative Do at The Store? | Team Schierl Companies

What do you think a day in the life of a Guest Service Representative (GSR) at a convenience store looks like? Think it’s all about standing at the register? Well then, you might be surprised to learn there’s much more to it than that!

We knew the best way to share more about the guest service role was to go directly to the source. So we talked to Katy, a Team Leader at our Store location in east Stevens Point. We checked in with her and asked her to help us learn more about a day in her shoes.

Customers are Number One

First things first: Customer service—or Guest service as we like to call it at The Store—is a huge part of the day-to-day work for our GSRs.

In fact, according to Katy, it’s “our most important thing.”

“One of my biggest focuses with my team is that the Guest is number one. We greet every Guest. We want them to feel welcome. They can ask for assistance, and we’re going to offer it when maybe they haven’t even asked us to.”

Katy’s proud of how well her Associates treat Guests at The Store, and know it’s a major part of why people become repeat customers.

“A lot of people come in every day, or sometimes even twice a day. And they really connect with our team … they really have created those bonds with people,” Katy says of her team. “You can tell as they progress in their time here, they love their job even more because of who they get to work with on both sides of the register.”

We couldn’t agree more, Katy! The relationships and conversations our GSRs have with our Guests each day are not only important to the environment we want to create, but reflect who we are as a locally owned, family-run business.

Also along with serving our Guests, GSRs help stock shelves so our Guests have what they need, fill the cooler with the ice cold beverages we all love, make sure our coffee is always hot and full, fill our bakery cases with scrumptious goodies and help keep our location sparkling clean.

Working in the Kitchen

But not all GSR work is in the front of the house—you probably don’t even realize it, but we’re cooking in the back!

“All of our Associates are trained to work in the kitchen. A lot of people don’t realize how much we do,” Katy shares.

In the kitchen, Associates prepare the many types of food and snacks we all love and crave—from fresh-baked cookies and turnovers to burgers and chicken strips. GSRs manage the kitchen equipment, like ovens and fryers, to help make the food our Guests love to grab on the go.

Sound intimidating? Don’t worry, it’s not! In fact, Katy says it’s “super simple,” especially if you have restaurant experience. If not, Katy’s more than ready to teach you!

And that’s Katy’s favorite part about kitchen work. “It’s fun, it’s simple, and everyday, it’s all fresh.” Plus, she says it’s hard not to enjoy the everyday scent of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies.
